Honda announces new Hornet… but is at actually a Hornet?
Right, so here’s the thing…
Honda announced at EICMA 2021 that the legendary “Hornet” name will be returning to its line-up - but we have a few issues with it.
Before we get onto that though, let’s just remind ourselves about the last iteration that we saw. Back in 2011, Honda launched a new version of the CB600F and also a faired version, carrying the CBR600F name - and it was lovely. It was so lovely in fact, that Matt bought himself the CBR version and was rather chuffed with it.
Both versions were essentially the same bike - but used the tried and tested recipe as previous iterations of the Hornet - a nice, revvy 600cc inline-four. And while the faired version was soon replaced by a 650cc version, it was a tasty little package while it lasted.
But with the new Euro 5 stipulations that have come into play - the Hornet of the 2020s may very well be closer to that of the NC range than any of its previous namesakes. Now, don’t get us wrong - the NC is a very capable bike (again, Matt bought one of those too) but it’s not quite the same thing, is it?
While this hasn’t been confirmed yet - a modified version of the NC’s twin engine seems to be the most likely candidate for the new CB750S.
For now, Honda is keen to focus on the bike’s design.
Designer, Giovanni Dovis said: “Honda’s design philosophy is to create something pure and functional in an uncomplicated way – models which are both beautifully simple and emotionally appealing. The sketches show how the Hornet design concept promises agility, dynamism and lightweight thanks to its slim proportions, pointy tail section and super-sharp lines. It creates a new compactly proportioned look, and has hallmarks of tension and aggression from front to back, outlining the Hornet’s true sporting purpose.”
Sketches aside, we’ll reserve judgment until the bike actually breaks cover.
