‘Pimp My Ride’ is coming back… no really!
Pimp My Ride was a show that was very ‘of its time’. It was the quintiessential early 2000s binge-worthy MTV show - and became the show that sky-rocketed Xzibit to a level of popularity that his music never did.
The Uk show, on the other hand, was so painful it should have never existed. The US show tended to use old American bangers that had a fair amount of real estate inside, which led to laughably quirky interiors and gadgets galore. However, with its British counterpart, you’d usually have someone with a Vauxhall Corsa or Citroen Saxo that would end up looking like something you’d see in a Supermarket carpark on a Saturday night. And that’s without even touching on the fact that it was fronted by DJ Tim Westwood - who was a divisive figure at the best of times - but the fact that he was in his fifties at this point only added to the cringe factor.
But it just so happens, that MTV UK and eBay are bringing the iconic noughties makeover series, but at least this time it’s going to fronted by someone who’s a bit more palatable - rapper Lady Leshurr.
Although, this time around there’s a new dimension with it being heavily sponsored by eBay - presumably to boost their sales of car parts (which, to be fair, have increased a lot since COVID).
And what about the small hatchbacks? Well, so far we’ve been promised that the show will feature everything from a restored 1966 Volkswagen Beetle to a Fast & Furious-inspired 1992 Mitsubishi GTO, which… has potential. It suggests that the show is more “giving classics a new life” rather than something you’d see in an issue of Max Power with the pages stuck together.
We’re still not sure. But we’re willing to give it a chance.
